There is something to be said about simplicity. As I stand in the kitchen making my morning cup of coffee and watching the sun rise over the dewed grass out the back window, I am reminded of Lamentations 3:22-23, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
As the day continues, there are constant distractions from the phone, the TV, the dog, and the never ending to-do lists that seem to make finding simplicity just out of reach.
Every day it seems like no matter how hard you try and how many things get marked off your list there are two more things added in their place.
This can give you an overwhelming feeling of Will this ever stop? and Can I ever get ahead?.
I have found on those days when I don’t set aside one-on-one time with God I feel overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted. Time spent in the Word is so important to starting my day and really gets me going and energized about the day God has prepared for me. Fixing our eyes on Jesus and not on wealth or ease or achievement is how we live our lives for Him and find the peace in simplicity.
After taking that time to reinforce my relationship with Him, I find it so much easier to set aside the lists and interruptions and spend time with my family distraction free!
I am able to more easily be in the moment and remind myself of the blessings and how important my family is to me. There I find the simplicity of togetherness.
Putting down the phone and all devices and distractions before the day has started and taking that devotional time with the Lord each morning has helped me find simplicity, and I hope it helps you find it too! Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”
